Saint Chrodegang becomes Bishop of Metz. He reformed the life of the chapter and the clerics, facilitated the introduction of the Metz Gregorian chant and enlarged the ‘‘cathedral group’’.

Charles the Bald is crowned in the Cathedral.

Bishop Thierry I encourages the construction of a Romanesque Cathedral.
1040
The Romanesque Cathedral is consecrated.
1220
Bishop Conrad of Scharfenberg orders the construction of the Gothic Cathedral, a construction that will be finished in 1552.
1381
Hermann of Munster begins the rose window and the large glass roof of the western facade.
1468
A fire ignites on both the roof and the wooden tower which served as a belfry.
1521
Valentin Bousch completes the large glass roof of the south transept.
1754
The demolition of the cloister -dating from the eleventh century- and of the surrounding chapels, in order to realize the current Place d’Armes.

The construction of a classical portal into the western facade by the architect Jacques-François Blondel, commemorating the unexpected recovery of Louis XV, in Metz in 1744.

A fire ignites on the roof due to fireworks fired in honor of the emperor William I.

The installation of Jacques Villon’s stained glass windows in the chapel of the Blessed Sacrament.

The installation of Marc Chagall’s stained glass windows in the ambulatory and the north transept.

The reorganization of the choir with the help of Swiss designer Mattia Bonetti.
